Leading Technology in Weigh-In-Motion

Roads&HighwaysKistler’s Lineas Strip WIM sensor comes with all the advantages for applications such as traffic data collection, overload detection, bridge protection, tolling, pavement planning & traffic research. The company has installed more than 3000 installations worldwide including India.

Roads & Highways are built with huge investments. The ROI takes years to be claimed back. Damages of the roads caused by overloaded trucks adversely affect the chain of investments & returns.

To prevent this, tolling by Weight concept has been introduced by our Government, with attention now increasingly focused not only on gross axle weight, but also on axle & wheel load. Road authorities therefore have an appropriate interest in detecting vehicles with excessive axle loads, in which a certain tonnage of truck can carry the load within the prescribed limits and the road can be utilized for longer time frame, without any hindrance to the users at minimal maintenance cost.

Implementers of WIM are aware that accuracy, stability with minimal civil works and ease of installation coupled with minimal collection losses are the crucial factors. Kistler’s Lineas Strip WIM sensor comes with all the advantages for measuring wheel & axle loads and for determining the gross vehicle weight under rolling conditions.

Quartz Technology

Quartz-TechnologyAs one of the most common minerals found on the earth, natural quartz has been replaced with synthetic quartz in many sensing applications. It can be produced with perfect atomic structure and almost no defects.

As a result of the linear response of quartz over a very wide measuring range, it is possible to accurately measure both the weight of a locomotive (100 ton) and the weight of a coin (10g) using the same sensor.

Another outstanding feature of quartz is its stability. The properties (e.g. sensitivity) do not change during the whole lifetime, which means that the sensors do not need to be recalibrated over the years. Also, there is no electric signal generated as a result of temperature change. The result of this is that there are no changes due to changes in temperature. The high accuracy and stability of the Lineas sensors originates from the perfect atomic structure of the quartz crystal.

The sensing element used within the Kistler strip sensors, is made from quartz.

Each Lineas sensor consists of 20 or more quartz discs mounted in a special aluminum profile, which allows the very precise measurement of vertical forces, such as wheel loads. The generated charge is exactly proportional to the load. The quartz discs which are encased in the aluminum profile along with appropriate electronics & software –provides the best results for weigh-in-motion.

The Lineas strip WIM sensor is accepted & successfully implemented worldwide with more than 3000 installations including India, for applications such as traffic data collection, overload detection, bridge protection, tolling, pavement planning & traffic research.
