ATCS for Surat

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has earmarked a budget of Rs 103Cr for the intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) for the city. A Thiruvananthapuram-based company has bagged the tender for installing Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) in the city.

The civic body in co-ordination with city police has identified around 267 traffic junctions where the smart sensors will be installed along with 398 high-density CCTV cameras. An integrated computer-based sensor system will control the duration of the red or green light at the traffic junctions, depending on the density of the vehicular traffic.

The system would also ensure red lights on all directions to facilitate movement of pedestrians. A ‘hooter’ will alert the pedestrians to cross in 10 to 20 seconds time when the pedestrian signal would turn green.

Apart from smart traffic signalling system, the integrated system will also catch the offenders flouting the traffic norms like jumping the signals, over-speeding, driving without helmet and seat-belt etc.
