Parking management has now become the most difficult component of total traffic management around the world. As vehicle usage increases, the pressure on the traffic system to optimise parking space usage too increases. On the positive side are the varied mobile apps developed to make parking easier and faster both for on street and off street parking. These help finding empty spots, give directions, simplify payment procedures, book the space in advance and even boost revenue for the parking space owners. However, the challenges are many, say some of the apps providers. The main concern is lack of co-ordination between communities, municipalities, and software & hardware developers.

Another focus story of this issue of TrafficInfraTech is the growing market for security systems in India, especially for CCTV cameras. Video surveillance is the first step in traffic regulation, enforcement processes and violation detection. The smart city programmes have triggered the inclusion of world class technologies in the security system, but here again there are certain challenges. The technology providers feel that there is still a lack of awareness when it comes to choosing the right product. Technical expertise is not enough and there is a need to integrate cameras with other intelligent traffic systems.

Globally, the automotive industry is seeing major changes: driverless cars, autonomous cars, electric vehicles etc. Today, most of the major OEM are investing in electric drivetrain technologies and hybrid & EVs have already been introduced commercially in India too by companies like Mahindra, Tata Motors and Maruti. We have three essays covering all aspects of EV – technology, environmental and fuel advantages and the challenges that include investment in public charging networks.

As we come to ITS, it is about the applications in city bus systems. Through data analysis, agencies/operators can provide better information to passengers, improve productivity and operational efficiency.
