Road safety products are often not fully utilized. Sometime these products are installed and are kept in operation for one year or more, and after that no maintenance contract is signed and the equipment becomes unusable. At many places, it has been noticed that the authorities do not have budgets for the Annual Maintenance Contract. This is the reason, the equipment are not being used for continuous operation.

Many-a-time, authorities are not aware of the latest technology and products available in the market. They tend to take information/specifications about the products/brands from the websites of different companies which becomes very cumbersome. And thus, we never get the product that can fulfill complete requirement of the system. In my opinion, there should be a central authority with a team working on the latest technology and availability of various equipment in the international market and also the technical requirements for the users. There should be enough funding from the government to this central authority to enable them to attend various seminars, technical papers and exhibition throughout the world. On the other side, the system providers should do road shows with the state government to present the technical capabilities of the latest products and their applications from time- to- time and also participate in the exhibitions and seminars.

Again, there is a gap about the technology and product awareness between the authorities and the system providers. More and more opportunities should be generated to show- case the technology and the products to the authorities. This can be done regions wise and state wise. Here, the expertise of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) can be utilized to give technical information to authorities like NHAI, Traffic Police Department, PWD and CPWD.

Many safety products are available in the market which can be interfaced with ITS, but at times, the manufacturer is not willing to share the technicalities with the other manufacturer because of the proprietary nature. We hope this thinking goes away and products will be able to integrate with each other. Imported products may not always meet our standards. And thus, there is a need to do research and development of prevailing requirements and traffic scenarios in India.
