Kolkata Metro set for big expansion

Kolkata Metro is set for a massive expansion of its coverage area, with plans to expand its total length from the present 25km to 110km. The new plans include provisions for both – construction of new lines as well as extending the present ones. The extension projects will cost र11,000 crore. New interchanging facilities in the offing will enable commuters to change from one Metro corridor to another, and between suburban services on the Eastern and South-Eastern Railways. The Metro will get an automatic ticketing collection (ATC) machine and a new ticketing system. Three new air-conditioned rakes will also be introduced. Kolkata Metro provides the cheapest urban transport in India – with a minimum fare of र4.
