Social policing initiative

P Vijayan, the Police Commissioner of Kozhikode, has launched a project which will ensure that vehicle parts, personal belongings kept in vehicles and bikes are not stolen in Kerala any more. Called the Student Police Cadet (SPC) Project, the social policing initiative aims at bringing juveniles arrested for stealing bikes, computers and other belongings into the mainstream.

He has involved the Institute of Palliative Medicine (IIPM), a few Rotary Clubs, Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (IMHANS) and a few active citizens in his efforts. His project has found favour with Kerala government. It will function like National Cadet Corps (NCC) or National Service Scheme (NSS).

Over 100 aided and 300 unaided schools have been brought under the project that will inculcate the spirit of integration and secularism among pupils and make them law-abiding citizens.

So, the arrest of a few juveniles involved in traffic crimes has now led to a statewide project which is being acclaimed by all.
