FOCUS
If we go by this year’s theme of International
Women’s day promoting equity, then that is
something we need to work on to create an
inclusive workforce in the traffic/transport
segment. Not that there are not enough
opportunities or openings, it is just that enough
efforts are not made to create awareness about
the career paths that can be worked around right
from traffic management to supervising the road
construction sites. In India, we do have women
who lead traffic technology companies, do
road related research, engage in town planning,
drive trucks/buses & autos or work as transport
administrators. Talking to Mangala Chandran are
women leaders from different transport related
functions – Madhu Meenakshi Karthikeyan,
Managing Director, DataCorp Traffic who has
inherited business acumen from her grandfather;
Dr. Ambika Behl, Senior Principal Scientist, Flexible
Pavement Dept, CSIR-Central Road Research
Institute & Minimol Korulla Jacob, Head - Strategic
Initiatives & Strategic Projects - ISEAP (India,
South East Asia& Pacific) Region, Maccaferri,
both primarily into research in pavement
technology, (yet mostly on site, supervising the
work in progress); and Sonal Shah, Founder of
Urban Catalysts. This year the organisation was
recognised by the German government for
catalysing gender-equitable mobility systems.
